Variable Speed Pumps: Cleaner Pools, Quieter Operation, Save Hundreds of Dollars Season After Season
Finally a huge leap forward in swimming pools. Many of us on Long Island have old, antiquated open magnet and winding pool pumps. These single speed pumps operate loud when new, and as the bearings and inner workings get older, they get even louder. Variable speed pumps work much more efficiently and quietly.
Smaller Long Island yards mean your pump is usually closer to your house. Convert to a variable speed pump so you won’t hear your pump inside your home or on your patio.

Efficiency is the Main Reason to Upgrade to a Variable Speed Pump
An old, single-speed Inground Pump runs around 1500W. Your refrigerator runs at around half of that. Even though we don’t use our pool pumps the entire year, the costs still add up. A Variable Speed pump that runs at a third more than a single speed pump is 88% less expensive to run!
What Is The Difference?
Variable Speed Pump Motors are different from single speed pumps in that they are brushless and completely enclosed with a fan-cooled heatsink and completely keeps out insects, cobwebs, and grass clippings. These are two factors that make your pump last much longer. The difference in pumps are so great, the Department of Energy will even mandate all pumps 1HP and above be variable speed by July 19, 2021.
Variable Speed pumps are ran differently from single speed pumps. Most of us run a short, continuous cycle and the pump is mostly off for the day. With a variable speed pump, the pump is on more than it’s off. This means that on windy days, fallen debris gets collected in your skimmer and not the floor of your pool. It also means that with a chemical system, your water is continuously being sanitized day and night, and you’re much less prone to an algae breakout.
Timers have traditionally allowed for two settings; on and off. Built-in micro timers allow for Variable Speed pumps to be run at different times of the day, at different speeds. If you want to vacuum or add an extra dose of chemicals, simply override the current cycle to the maximum speed. When your maximum override cycle has completed, your regularly scheduled operation will continue.
